However, nowadays is commonly believed that the name comes from an old Roman settlement called “Marice”.

Currently, Madrid is one of the most important business centers in Europe and of course the largest in Spain, having amazing modern buildings and fashionable shopping areas that are widely visited by people from all over the world. However, Madrid is not only modern buildings; if you walk through the city you will find beautiful and ancient places and monuments like The Buen Retiro Park, the national archives and of course the archeological museum.  Madrid is a city that definitely you cannot fail to visit.

Its landmarks include the huge royal palace; a restored 1850 opera house; the Buen Retiro park, opened in 1631; the imposing 19th-century building containing the national library (founded 1712), the national archives, and an archaeological museum; and three superb art museums–the Prado, which houses one of the finest art collections in the world; the Queen Sofía Museum of modern art; and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, housed in the renovated Villahermosa Palace.
